Using the cafeteria
Is the BKC cafeteria open to the public?
Yes. Nadeshico Cafeteria is open not only to students, faculty and staff of Ritsumeikan University Biwako-Kusatsu Campus (BKC) but also to people from the surrounding area. As we are inside the campus, please also check the university's guidance on entering the grounds.
Can people other than students use the BKC student cafeteria?
Yes. Alongside students, faculty and staff, people from the surrounding area are welcome too. We are laid out as a food court, so you collect your dish and then take a free seat. There is also a covered lawn terrace.
What kind of place is Nadeshico Cafeteria?
It is a food court where six lanes share one floor. Each lane serves a different genre — Asian dishes, iron-pot dishes, spice curry, ankake pasta, cafe-style plates and more. Please check at the counter for the line-up on the day.
I am looking for a student cafeteria in Kusatsu — can anyone eat there?
Yes. We are inside Ritsumeikan University Biwako-Kusatsu Campus (BKC) in Noji-higashi, Kusatsu, and we welcome students, faculty and staff as well as people from the area. We are open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:30, and closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
What do you recommend at the Ritsumeikan BKC cafeteria?
Each lane has its own speciality: Tiger Hanten for Asian dishes, Tetsunabe Shokudo for rice dishes served in the hot iron pot they were cooked in, plus lanes for spice curry, ankake pasta and cafe-style plates. The line-up changes from day to day, so please check the notices at the counter or our Instagram.
Is it comfortable to come alone?
We are a food court, so a great many people come on their own. You collect your dish first and then choose a seat, so there is no need to secure a table before queuing.
Can I sit anywhere?
We are a food court, so you collect your dish and then take a free seat. There is also a covered lawn terrace. Please ask at the counter for details on how seating is managed.
How many seats are there?
We do not publish a seat count. Please check at the counter, along with how busy we are.
Can I come with children or visiting family?
Yes, you are very welcome. Please ask our staff at the counter about facilities for children. Coming outside the busiest hours will give you a more relaxed meal.
When does it get crowded?
It can fill up between classes and around lunchtime. How busy we are varies from day to day, so if you would like a relaxed meal we recommend coming outside those hours.
Can I make a reservation?
Please check at the counter about taking reservations. You are also welcome to contact us and we will help as far as we can.
Who operates Nadeshico Cafeteria?
It is operated by nadeshico. We hold to three words — safe, delicious and stylish — and cook with seasonal produce from Shiga Prefecture.

Are you open at weekends?
We are closed on Saturdays and Sundays. We look forward to seeing you on a weekday.

Are you open during the university's long vacations?
Opening hours may change in line with the university calendar. Please check the notices at the counter or our Google Business Profile before visiting.
When is last order?
Last-order times are announced at the counter. If you are arriving close to our 16:30 closing time, please check with each lane.
What time do you open in the morning?
We open at 9:00 on weekdays. What we serve can differ depending on the time of day, so please check at the counter for details.
Are you open in the evening?
We close at 16:30 and do not open in the evening.
Do the lanes have different hours?
Some lanes may take orders during different hours. Please check the notices at the counter.
Do you have occasional closures?
We may close temporarily for university events. We will announce this in our news.

Do I need to do anything to enter the campus?

Gakushoku app and payment
Can I use the Gakushoku app at Ritsumeikan BKC?
Yes. You can order through our own Gakushoku app. Ordering ahead and collecting your dish helps a great deal when you only have a short break between classes.
What can the Gakushoku app do?
You can order ahead and collect, pay, and send money to another user — handy for families sending an allowance. Please ask our staff at the counter if you are unsure how it works.
Where can I get the Gakushoku app?
It is distributed on the App Store as “Gakushoku App”. Please ask a member of staff at the counter if you are unsure.
I heard families can send money for meals.
The Gakushoku app has a money-transfer function, so a family can send an allowance to a student's app. We can walk you through the steps at the counter.
Can I order without the app?
Advance ordering is available through our Gakushoku app. For how to order in person on the day, please check the notices at the counter.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept credit cards, electronic money and QR-code payments, and you can also pay through the Gakushoku app. Please check at the counter for the brands we handle.

Is takeaway available?
Please check at the counter about taking food away. Some dishes may not travel well because of packaging.
Is Wi-Fi available?
We do not provide Wi-Fi information for the cafeteria itself. Please refer to the university's guidance about the campus network.
How long has the cafeteria been here?
We had our grand opening on Biwako-Kusatsu Campus in November 2021 as “Forest Dining nadeshico”, and a later renewal gave us the lane-based layout we have today.
Do you work together with the university?
For the renewal we worked together with Ritsumeikan University's College of Gastronomy Management.
What do you care about as a cafeteria?
Safe, delicious and stylish — that is what we hold to. We cook with seasonal produce from Shiga Prefecture and serve plates that make sense for somewhere you come to every day.
